Bacteriostatic Water
Sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol
Pfizer bacteriostatic water for reconstituting lyophilized peptides. The benzyl alcohol preservative allows multiple withdrawals from a single vial.

About this product
Bacteriostatic water for injection is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth, which is what allows a multi-dose vial to be entered repeatedly over a period of days or weeks without contaminating its contents. Plain sterile water has no preservative and is intended for single use.
It is the standard solvent for reconstituting lyophilized peptides in the laboratory. We supply the Pfizer (Hospira) product in its sealed multi-dose vial; it is a licensed pharmaceutical product, unlike the peptides in this catalogue.
Mechanism
Benzyl alcohol at 0.9% is bacteriostatic — it stops bacteria from multiplying rather than killing them outright — and is compatible with most peptides at the concentrations used for reconstitution. It is not suitable for every application: some cell-culture and neonatal protocols exclude benzyl alcohol, and a few proteins are destabilised by it.
Notes
- Pharmaceutical-grade, sealed multi-dose vial
- Required for reconstituting nearly every lyophilized peptide we carry
- Store at room temperature; discard 28 days after first puncture
