BPC-157

Body Protection Compound pentadecapeptide

BPC-157 is a 15-amino-acid fragment of a protective protein found in gastric juice. It is among the most extensively studied peptides in preclinical healing research. Supplied lyophilized, one 10mg vial.

About BPC-157

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide — fifteen amino acids — whose sequence is taken from a protective protein isolated from human gastric juice. It was first described by Predrag Sikirić and colleagues at the University of Zagreb, whose group has published the majority of the several hundred animal studies on it since the early 1990s.

In those studies BPC-157 has been examined for effects on the healing of tendon, ligament, muscle, bone, skin and the gastrointestinal lining, on blood-vessel formation and on the gut–brain axis. Unusually for a peptide, it is reported to be stable in gastric acid. Human data remain very limited: a Phase 1 safety study and a small retrospective case series. It is not approved by any regulator and is prohibited in sport by WADA.

Mechanism

Proposed mechanisms from animal work include up-regulation of growth-hormone receptor expression in fibroblasts, activation of the FAK–paxillin pathway that drives cell migration, modulation of the nitric-oxide system and promotion of new blood-vessel growth via VEGFR2. Its gastric stability and effects on gut healing are why it is often described as a 'cytoprotective' peptide in the literature.

Areas of research

  1. Studied for accelerated tendon-to-bone healing in rodent models
  2. Investigated for gastrointestinal mucosal protection
  3. Research interest in angiogenesis and nitric-oxide pathway modulation
  4. Stable in gastric acid — unusual for a peptide of its size

Storage

Lyophilized: store cool, dark and dry — refrigeration is ideal. Once reconstituted, refrigerate at 2–8 °C.

Reconstitution

Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water.

Handling

Readily soluble in bacteriostatic water (1 mL per 10 mg vial gives 10 mg/mL; 2 mL gives 5 mg/mL). Swirl gently until the solution is clear. BPC-157 is one of the more stable short peptides, but the same rules apply: keep lyophilized vials cold and dark, refrigerate solution at 2–8 °C, and avoid repeated freezing.
